Uncle (2025)

Set against the backdrop of China’s economic transition in the 1990s, the story follows Lao Jiu, who, after being laid off, relies on his wit and resourcefulness to embark on a series of money-making schemes—some practical, some wildly impractical. To fulfill his daughter Cui Meng’s wish, he promises to buy her a Xiali car; to his sister, he pledges to raise her son Er Pang, whom she entrusted to him; and out of loyalty, he takes care of his imprisoned friend Guo Dapao’s daughter, Xiao Xue, vowing to clear her father’s name. As the children grow up and emotional bonds deepen, conflicts, grievances, departures, and reunions unfold among the characters. In the end, Lao Jiu keeps every promise he has made. Centered on the figure of Lao Jiu, the series is a realist, period light comedy that makes audiences laugh through tears—and cry through laughter.
